Truth Matters – Verein für Informationskompetenz is an Austrian non-profit association dedicated to information literacy, fact-based reporting, and compliance with national and international legal norms. We document deviations transparently so that citizens can take part in an informed democracy.
View current initiatives Become a memberWe strengthen the public's ability to critically evaluate information, assess sources, and recognise manipulative narratives — as a foundation for democratic participation.
We advocate for reporting grounded in verified facts, one that fairly represents all perspectives and favours no political or institutional agenda. Disinformation does not become truth through repetition.
We hold states and institutions to national and international legal norms — including international humanitarian law, EU law, and fundamental rights — and document deviations transparently.
Disinformation does not only impair individual judgment — it undermines trust in institutions, polarises societies, and creates the conditions for violations of legal norms and human rights.

We conduct systematic research and monitoring projects on disinformation, media coverage, and compliance with information and transparency standards.
We use freedom-of-information laws, regulatory procedures, and international mechanisms to examine and publicly document state compliance with legal norms.
We organise talks, seminars, and workshops, and provide online resources to give citizens tools for critical media evaluation.
We foster dialogue with media, educational institutions, academia, and civil society organisations at national and international level.
We produce and distribute analyses, reports, and information materials on information integrity, media policy, and democratic transparency.
We work with national and international institutions to promote information literacy and compliance with international legal and human rights norms.
We are engaged in a formal process concerning the statutory objectivity obligations of Austria's public broadcaster.
Following the 2019 European Court of Justice ruling requiring clear origin labelling for goods from Israeli settlements, we are following up on how this obligation is being implemented in Austria.
We engage with relevant international mechanisms where Austrian conduct intersects with international legal obligations.
